I could be wrong on what total war arena is all about but I never had the impression you were the commander on the field. But the medium cavalry fared better following it's commander, because their charge was a "follow charge" ability so when you went through enemy formations they were right behind you just raping shit.
Like the heavy cavalry would usually be best being held together and cycle charged into enemy fights. So you would be the general riding around the field to pick up intelligence or jump into the fight while your units did there thing. You could tell them where to go, to stick with you, to attack, to stay in formation.
If you told them to go attack they would just run off alone towards the enemy base. If you never gave your troop a formation order they would just sort of mob around. You actually moved and fought on the field personally. The adjutant let you decide on different formations to bring to the table, to set up in a line or a crescent or whatever they had access to. In Tiger Knight you were a general and had a adjutant.
